In March 2026, after spending more than a week at sea (for most) over 1270 nautical miles, competitors will cross the finish line of the inaugural Trans-Tasman Yacht Race in Waitematā Harbour, Auckland – home of the 2024 America’s Cup champions (Emirates Team New Zealand).

Waitematā Harbour is full of life with its beautiful green foreshore and non-stop ferries en route to Waiheke Island (also known as wine island).

Auckland also has a rich sailing history. It doesn’t get much better than sailing to a finish line, with Sky Tower in the background, in a harbour where so many sailing greats have been before – from America’s Cup and Olympic great Peter Burling to offshore sailing legend, the late Sir Peter Blake.

With less than five months until the CYCA’s inaugural Trans-Tasman Yacht Race, now is the time to get your boat race ready and to enter the race across the ditch – the 2026 Trans-Tasman Yacht Race.

‘Why?’ you ask. ‘Give me one reason why I should sail across the Tasman Sea?’

We’ve got a pretty convincing reason for why you should enter the race, organised by the CYCA with finishing partner Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

It’s the Waitematā Harbour finish line that dreams are made of.

The competitors in The Ocean Race (formerly the Volvo Ocean Race), arguably the most competitive round the world yacht race, can testify to that.

The finish line for the leg from Fremantle or Sydney to Auckland has resulted in some top tier viewing for spectators over the years.

From La Poste beating Galicia ’94 by a mere 12 seconds for fourth place in the 1993/94 race, to first placed Merit Cup blowing up its main sail as it neared the 1997/98 finish line.
